Political accountability for BC MLAs
About
Fequently Asked Questions
Who are you?
A group of citizens who want to see accountability in politics, who are tired of the idea of an honest politician being an joke phrase which inspires snickers. Its time we did bring honour back to politics and have politicians who represent us, listen to us, and don’t mislead us.
We’re the same group that initiated RecallBC in the early 2000s, so we have some experience with this. Particularly the “recipe for recall” developed by local campaigns during this previous incarnation.
Why are you doing this?
If a politician sees their job on the line because of their actions in a short time scale than the four year election cycle. If they learn there is a point of pushing the public too far. Hopefully there will be a culture change in politics, hopefully we’ll scare away the career politicians and get inspiring leaders who listen to the public. Who lead rather than react. And who plan their policy by engaging the public, not convincing them.
How can I get involve?
Signup for our mailing list, we promise to respect privacy and not use information for any purpose outside of this recall initiative. Get involved with a local campaign. Or organize a local campaign, a recall initiative starts with a single person filing the paperwork with Elections BC.
Why are you starting now and not in the fall when recalls can actually begin?
By having our ducks lined up ahead of time, having teams in place and lists of voters who want to sign it will greatly easy the pressure on a local campaign. The bar for recall is significantly higher than for initiative, 40% as opposed to 10% of voters are needed. The more prepared we are before the 90 clock begins the better the chance of success.
What about this recall “hit list” we keep hearing about?
While a single issue has sparked the recall talk in BC, and obviously a single part is on the side of this issue the majority of voters are not happy with, we at RecallBC really do want to remain as non-partisan as possible. For that reason we provide information and support uniformly across the province no matter what riding you’re in, no matter what party your MLA represents. We’re about connecting like minded people and helping with resources such as our “recipe for recall” developed in the early 2000s during the first RecallBC incarnation.
This isn’t about refighting the last election, this isn’t even necessarily about changing the government. This is about accountability. Everyone will join and get involved with recall campaigns for their own reason and that’s all right. We’re not interested in what motivates you to get involved, only that you are interested with being connected to like minded individuals who have the sale goal, political accountability through recall.
Do you want any donations?
Absolutely not. It takes nearly zero dollars to put up a website. If you wish to contribute towards RecallBC, please donate your time and effort. As well individual recall campaigns on the ground when they get going will likely need financial support to be successful, save your hard earned dollars for when they need it. The virtual world is cheap, its when we get in to the physical world with photocopies, offices, posters, etc that the local campaigns may need your donations. But here, we only need your time.
